Christian artist Vitra: design, architecture and utilitarian art

All designers, architects and artists of international recognition that one can imagine are in the complex Vitra. On campus is a museum, outdoor sculptures, buildings of renowned architects, shop, cafe and restaurant and more. Located in Weil am Rhein, a small German town on the banks of the Rhine, just minutes by bus from the border town of Basel Switzerland. Vitra

born in the early years fifty as a furniture company Fehlbaum Swiss family. Since its inception was renowned furniture designers, including Jean Prouvé (France), George Nelson (USA), Charles & Ray Eames (USA) and Verner Panton (Denmark). Much of what is today a must-see for lovers of design, architecture and utilitarian art, owes Rolf Fehlbaum, head of the company since the late seventies.

The museum's collection
The Vitra Design Museum by architect Frank Gehry California (USA), his first building in Europe. The origins of the museum back in the early eighties when Fehlbaum began collecting furniture designers who had influenced the development of your business.







The museum has one of the largest collections of modern furniture design in the world, representing parts of the main stylistic periods, from the beginning of the century century to the present. Industrial wood furniture is curved designs of Viennese architects of the early twentieth century, tubular steel furniture of the twenties and thirties, Scandinavian designer pieces (1930-1960), Italian, American, and two or three regular and traveling exhibitions per year.

museum is the best known of the seven in Weil am Rhein. Receives about 70,000 people a year. The slogan of the city a seat in Weil am Rhein is no coincidence, is related to the company Vitra. A giant chair, Maxiaturen , welcomes visitors to this German city.

The Vitra Campus houses a 'library' of buildings and works of contemporary architects and artists began in the early 80's after the fire that destroyed much of the company. The Vitra factory buildings have been designed by architects Nicholas Grimshaw (Great Britain) Alvaro Siza (Portugal) (top photo 1) and Gehry. The Conference Hall is the work of Tadao Ando Japanese (photo 2) , Fire Station of the Iraqi Zaha Hadid (photo 3) , the Dome of the American Richard Buckminster Fuller (photo 4) , Station Gasoline Jean Prouvé, the UK Bus Station Jasper Morrison, the Vitra House (VitraHaus) of the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. VitraHaus is a multistory building, comprising for houses multiply and 'eat' each other creating a spectacular image (above, the first two photos) . The architects Herzog & de Meuron were inspired by the traditional houses of this region. Through the large windows filter the green landscape around Weil am Rhein.

Visit the campus buildings, museums, exhibitions and VitraHaus can take a full day, but there are facilities: guided tours, lunch or coffee in the restaurant and entertainment space for children (a left) .
